In January 1526 Isabella of Habsburg, Queen of Denmark and sister of the Emperor Charles V, died, leaving behind her three children: John, aged 8; Dorothea, aged 5; and Christina, aged 3. Christina was later portrayed by Hans Holbein the Younger (1497/8-1543) as a prospective bride for Henry VIII. In the Royal Collection’s triple portrait, thought to have been painted in the same year, these children are shown wearing the sombre clothes of mourning. More about this painting
